Geneve E. Hammell

Geneve E. Hammell, age 89, of Casper passed away on Monday Sept. 24, 2001, at Shepherd of the Valley Care Center in Casper. A memorial service was held Friday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Ciemanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk. Chaplain Marvin Skogen from Shepherd of the Valley Care Center conducted the service. Inurnment will take place in the Lusk Cemetery.

Geneve was born on Oct. 24, 1911, to Hugh and Julia Baxter Black in Akron, Colo. At age 8, the family moved to a homestead 50 miles north of Lusk on Bogie Creek. They were true Cheyenne River community pioneers. Geneve's father died when she was 12 years old. Her mother and the 12 children remained on the ranch. Her mother provided for the family by running a few cattle and having a large garden.

She attended country school at the Central School House. This school house has been maintained and restored and is located at the Stagecoach Museum in Lusk. She graduated from high school in Thermopolis, taught country school before being married to Thomas J. Hammell on Dec. 21, 1929, in Hot Springs, S. D.

Tom and Geneve homesteaded on the Cheyenne River and to this union four boys were born. They moved to Edgemont, S. D., in 1947. She was a clerk in Colgan's Store and the grocery store in Edgemont. Geneve moved to Casper in the late '70's. She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star and a member of the Highland Park Church in Casper.

She is survived by four sons; James of Pierre, S.D.; Richard of Ely, Nev., William of Mule Creek Junction; and Benjamin of Riverton. She also was survived by one sister, Elizabeth Mosted of Blackduck, Minn.; one brother, Leroy Black of Sheridan; 10 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 42 years, one grandson, five brothers and five sisters.

A memorial has been established. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk is in charge of arrangements.
