Snowden Dixon, County Pioneer, Dies April 5th

Snowden Robert Dixon, 92, long-time Niobrara County rancher died in the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital April 5 following an illness of two years.

Funeral services were being held in the McCallogs Funeral Home in Newcastle Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. Interment was being made at Custer, S. Dak., beside his wife who was the first white child born in Custer.

Mr. Dixon was born December 10, 1870 at Shifnel, Shropshire County, England. He was the son of William and Elizabeth Dixon.

Mr. Dixon spent the early years of his life in England where he received his education. He came to the United States in 1884, living in Missouri until 1886, at which time they moved to the Black Hills--spending time both there and in Wyoming.

He was married February 19, 1897, at Custer, S. Dak. to Augusta E. Schmidt. Three sons were born.

They resided in Wyoming since their marriage, moving here in 1898, where he took up a homestead thirty miles south of Newcastle, which he still owned at the time of his passing.

Prior to his marriage, he worked on various ranches, which included the S and G, 4 W, Fiddleback, and Bridle Bit. After his marriage, he entered the ranching business for himself, continuing same for the rest of his life.

Last year, when the 100th homestead anniversary was held Mr. Dixon was recognized as the third oldest homesteader who still owned his original homestead in Wyoming.

He was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church, the Wyoming Stockgrower's Association and the American National Cattleman's Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and his wife.

He leaves his three sons: Arthur T. of Newcastle, Gerald L. of Greybull, Robert of Lance Creek; six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren.
