Nina Sue (James) DeGering

Nina James DeGering died Monday, Oct. 14, 1985, of cancer at the home of her parents, Lee and Mary James. She was 24.

Nina Sue James was born May 2, 1961, at Lusk. She was reared on the family ranch in the Kirtley community where her love for the ability to handle horses and other livestock developed.

"Though she was too sick to ride her horse Baldy, she was right out in the corral with the rest of us working livestock every chance she got." her family said.

Mrs. DeGering attended elementary and high school in Lusk. She attended elementary and high school in Lusk. She attended Western Nebraska Junior College in Scottsbluff and received an associate's degree in secretarial science from Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington in 1982.

As a youth she was involved in school and 4-H activities. She trained and showed livestock projects and at a very young age was a contestant in the Niobrara Junior King and Queen contest. She represented the community as Miss Rodeo Niobrara in 1982. She became an avid equestrian and trained and broke her own horses.

She worked at Niobrara Memorial Hospital as a purchasing agent until ill health forced her to take a leave of absence. She married Kenny DeGering June 15, 1985 at the Lusk Congregational Church. They made their home in the Hat Creek community.

"During her long illness, Nina never lost her zest for life and desire to make those around her happy." her husband said. "She was always thoughtful of others and right up to the very end was planning events to honor family members."

"She was also thankful for all the acts of caring extended her during her illness." her brother said.

She is survived by her husband, Kenny; parents, Lee and Mary James; brothers, Phillip James of Powell and David James of Lusk, and a sister, Kim Barry of Tampa, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Leola and Lavern James and Addie and Earle Hales.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Peet Mortuary. The Rev. Mark Lohr will officiate. Memorials have been established to the Niobrara Hospital Auxiliary and American Cancer Society
