John Earl York (October 13, 1890 - December 5, 1967)

John Earl York was born October 13, 1890 in Rich Hill, Missouri; the son of Jonathan and Isabell Petty York. He was the seventh of nine children.

John married Verna Ethel Thompson on May 3, 1920 in the Church of England at Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada. They returned to the states a few months after their marriage.

Mr. York came to Wyoming in 1906 where he spent the greater part of his life as a rancher at Shawnee, Wyoming. He worked various other jobs to supplement their income. He retired in 1953 and moved to Douglas, Wyoming leaving the ranch work to his sons, Earl and Donald.

He passed away December 5, 1967 leaving to survive him his wife, Verna; two sons, Earl and Donald of Douglas; one daughter, Grace Wintermote also of Douglas; eighteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one sister, Dellie Boyd of Claremore, Oklahoma and numerous nieces and nephews.

Information was obtained from family histories in "Pages from Converse County's Past" published by the Heritage Book Committee, Wyoming Pioneer Assoc., Douglas, Wyoming and his obituary.
