Gustav Adolph Owens (April 7, 1899 - June 17, 1968)

Gustav Adolph Owens, son of Peter and Mary Owens, was born April 7,1899 near Soldier, Iowa and died Thursday, June 17,1968 at a Sioux City hospital following a short illness. He was 69 years, two months, and ten days old.

Mr. Owens resided in the Ute community during his childhood and as a young man homesteaded in Lusk, Wyoming for five years. He returned to the Ute vicinity where he farmed and lived for many years.

He retired from farming, and moved into Mapleton, Iowa in 1966 where he lived for the remainder of his life. During infancy he was baptized into the Lutheran church, and was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Ute where he was presently a member.

Mr. Owens was married to Esther Ackelbein in 1927 at Charter Oak. One daughter and one son was born to this union. She preceded him in death in 1931. He was married to Elizabeth Andersen on April 16, 1933. Two daughters and three sons were born to this union.

Survivors include the widow, three daughters, Mrs. Howard (Beverly) Uhl of Mapleton; Mrs. Leonard (Mary)Riddle of Mapleton; Mrs. (Dona)Edward Colyer Jr. of Sioux City; four sons, Gordon of Ute, Harold of Los Angeles; Raymond of Sun Valley, Calif., and Robert who is stationed with the Untied States navy in Dunoon Scotland; 22 grandchildren; three brothers, Otto of Arcadia, Calif.; Peter of Lusk, Wyoming; Hugo of Aptos, California and one sister, Mrs. Albert Ketelsen of Mapleton. He was preceded ind death by his parents, one son, one daughter, two brothers, twos sisters and one grandson.

Services were held Thursday, June 20, 1969 at 1 p.m. at St. Pauls' Lutheran Church in Ute with Pastor E.T. Lange officiating. Pall bearers were Wilbur Kunzo, Vieri Johnson, Lloyd Struble, Adolph Schmidt, Jess Baker and Harry Sockstorf. Burial was in St. Clair cemetery under the direction of the Walter funeral home.
