Paul "Vern" L. Holtz, 82 of Scottsbluff, Neb. passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012 at Western Nebraska Veterans Home.
His memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at 10:30 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Harrison, Neb. with Rev. Greg Sonnenschein officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Harrison Cemetery with military honors by the Nebraska Army National Guard. Cremation has taken place. A memorial may be given to the church or Western Nebraska Veterans Home. Dugan Kramer Funeral Chapel and Cremation Services are in charge of arrangements.
Paul was born on Dec. 20, 1929 at the homestead by Harrison to Paul and Ruby (Keebler) Holtz. He received his early education at the Warbonnet School and Sioux County Schools and graduated from SCHS in 1947.
He married Cindy Callicoat on Aug. 24, 1968 at Harrison and to this union was born two daughters. They made their home in Harrison. They later divorced.
He lived and ranched in Sioux County leaving only to serve his country from 1951 to 1953. He was a diesel mechanic in the Army and went to live at the Western Nebraska Veterans home in 2009.
He was a member of the VFW, serving as Post Commander the American Legion Post #138 and Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his daughters Shannon Howshar of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Brenda Schlagel of Torrington, Wyo.; three grandchildren, Calli, Ashley and Jayden Schlagel; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Durl Holtz, sisters Marilyn Hutchinson and Donna "Dolly" Rising and nephew Kendy Rising.
