Memorial services for Charles B. Canfield, 75, were held Tuesday, May 6, 1986 at Peet Mortuary Chapel in Lusk. Rev. Arthur Greer officiated with burial following in the Lusk Cemetery.

Canfield died May 2 at West Nebraska General Hospital in Scottsbluff, NE. He was born Feb 4, 1911 at Marble City, AK, the son of Alfred and Ara Canfield. The family moved to David City, NE, and when Charles was six-yrs-old, they moved to Alliance, NE.

In 1922, they moved to Lance Creek, WY and in 1924, to a ranch south of Van Tassell. The family later settled in the Rawhide community where Charles attended school. In 1928, his father died, leaving Charles as head of the family.

Canfield then worked for various old-time ranchers, including Frank Rider, Walter Rynill, Frank Harris, Kaan brothers and the Wasserburgers, for a total of 48 years. He married Elaine Volentine on Dec 15, 1932 in Harrison, NE and they purchased the Volentine home ranch 15 miles southeast of Lusk. They continued to live there until his death.

He had also spent time with their daughter Dorothy in Torrington and spent the past six months in Torrington and Scottsbluff hospitals.

Canfield was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one daughter, a sister and one granddaughter. Survivors include his wife Elaine of Lusk; two sons, Leroy of Ridgecrest, Ca, and Kenneth of Van Tassell; one daughter Dorothy Mae Vollmer of Torrington; two sisters, June Jordan of Columbus, MT, and Gertruce Weber of Olympia, WA; one brother, Ross Canfield; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials to the Niobrara County Nursing Home will be appreciated by the family.
