Dora Alice Shimek

Dora Alice Shimek was born Aug. 17, 1900 at Breeds, Ill. the daughter of William and Arnata Mabin. She died Dec. 16, 1983 at Niobrara County Nursing Home in Lusk.

Her family moved to a farm in western Nebraska, near Berry in the early 1900's. There she liked to work with horses while she was growing up. She taught school in rural Nebraska for two terms before her marriage to Ed Shimek on Dec. 29, 1920.

This happy couple became the parents of 11 children. In the early 1920's she moved by covered wagon with her husband and children to a homestead north of Lance Creek. There she operated the Leverette Post Office in her home for a number of years.

In 1934 the family moved to Manville. She moved to Lusk in 1944 where she lived until her health began to fail. Then she began making her home with her children until she moved into the Nursing Home in 1978.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sons, one daughter, two sisters, and two grandchildren.

She is survived by eight children, Vlasta Jensen of Lusk, Avis Elliott of Hot Springs, Ark., Roy of Douglas, Helen Newcomb of Limon, Colo., Daisy Mundschenk of Palatine, Ill., Ernest of Vernal, Utah, Mary Richardson, St. Helen's, Ore. and Bertha Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas; one sister, Elizabeth McLean, one brother, William Mabin, 27 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

Services were held at Peet Mortuary Chapel in Lusk Dec. 19, 1983 with Rev. Mark Lohr officiating.

Music was by Rose Kremers, organist, J. J. Roberts, soloist, sang "Silent Night" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Active pallbearers were Joe Klemke, Martin Glandt, Ed Hoy, Andrew Newcomb, Bert Kaper and Robert Vollmer.

Interment was in Lusk cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Niobrara County Nursing Home. Arrangements were by Peet Mortuary.
