Services for Vern Lou Garhart, 81, who died May 11, 1984 in Wheatland, were held Wednesday, May 16, 1984 at 10:30 a.m. at Peet Mortuary at Lusk with the Rev. Gordon Swedberg officiating. Organist was Rose Kremers and Joy Kaltenheuser sang a Friend We Have in Jesus and Peace in the Valley.

His grandsons served as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.

Vern Garhart was born July 7, 1902 in Neligh, Nebr., the son of Charles and Bertha Garhart. He came with his family to homestead east of Glendo in 1918. He became associated with the Platte Valley Ranch as a range rider.

He married Evelyn Sullivan of Keeline on August 21, 1930. The couple farmed south of Shawnee on his father's homestead for a short time, then moved to Lance Creek where he worked in the oil fields.

Later in Manville, he was an auto mechanic in a garage he operated.

In 1958, they moved to Denver, Colo., where he operated a service station and used car business, retiring in 1967.

After 1979 the couple went to Wheatland for a short time, then moved to Manville, returning to Wheatland two years ago.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn of Wheatland; six daughters, Verna Pfister, of Commerce City, Colo., Arlene Arends of Guernsey, Nila Barrett of Wheatland, Joann Heins of Keeline, Carol Lambert of Dinosaur, Colo. and Marcia Cox of Chadron, Nebr.; Two brothers, Leonard Garhart of Osage and Ernest Garhart of Fort Laramie; two sisters, Florence Neal of O' Neill, Nebr., and Myrtle Poffenbarger of Redmond, Ore.; 25 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, four brothers, an infant son and daughter and one grandson.

A memorial in his name has been established to the Platte County Memorial Hospital Nursing Wing.

Burial was in the Dellview Cemetery in Manville.
