LaVonne Serres Pilgrim

A Christian Wake Service for LaVonne Pilgrim, 79, of Lusk, was held March 13, 2003, at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Lusk. A Mass of Christian Burial was held March 14, 2003, with Father Patrick Shea officiating. Interment followed in the Lusk Cemetery.

LaVonne Pilgrim died March 8, 2003, in Torrington.

LaVonne Serres Pilgrim was born in Sioux County, Nebraska, on April 22, 1923, the oldest daughter of E. J. "Jim" and Leona Wisdom Serres. Her mother died in 1931. Her father and Matilda "Tillie" Wasserburger were married in 1936. LaVonne attended country school and graduated from Sioux County High School in Harrison, Neb. She taught in rural schools in Sioux County. LaVonne later moved to Washington D.C., during World War II, where she had Civil Service jobs.

She married Elgie Pilgrim, of Macon, Ga., on June 30, 1945. After his service in the Army, they moved to Lance Creek, Wyo. where he was employed in the oil field. Their children Charles Earl and Vickie were born in Wyoming.

The family moved to Brush, Colo., in the late 1950's and later to Gillette, Wyo. on 1968, where Elgie was employed by Continental Oil Co. LaVonne held various jobs wherever they lived, including banking and retail.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two children, two brothers, Jim and Bob Serres; a sister, Betty Howland; and a half-brother Kenneth Serres.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law Dorothy Pilgrim of Oregon; half-sister Cindy Serres of Idaho; and two sisters-in-law, Loretta Serres of Lusk and Jan Serres of Buffalo, Wyo.

A memorial has been established to the Elgie and LaVonne Pilgrim Scholarship Fund, in care of the Sioux County Foundation, PO Box 216, Harrison, NE. 69346.

Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk was in charge of arrangements.
