H. Mahlon Peterson

Funeral services for H. Mahlon Peterson, 89, were held today, Aug. 12, 1992, at the United Methodist Church in Torrington with the Rev. Lonnie Johnston officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery. Peterson died at Community Hospital on Aug. 8, 1992. Memorial gifts to the Goshen County 4-H Foundation would be appreciated.

He was born May 11, 1903, at Lead, S.D., the son of John Nestande and Sophia (Matson) Peterson. The family moved by rail to a homestead south of Van Tassell in 1913 where they ranched and farmed for many years. Mahlon married a neighbor girl, Bessie McKelvey on Dec. 20, 1930, in Harrison, Neb., and they lived on the ranch in the Prairie Center community until they retired and moved to Torrington in 1972.

He was very active in community affairs all his life, being a member of Farm Bureau, the Republican Party, a 4-H leader and on the Wyoming Commission on Aging. He was instrumental in the building of the Prairie Center School and in the development of the Senior Citizens Friendship Center in Torrington.

He was an avid fan of the Torrington Junior Legion Baseball Program, attending all the home games for many years. He moved into the newly built Evergreen Court, being the third resident there.

He is survived by his son, Mahlon Nestande Peterson and his wife, Donna, of rural Torrington; daughter, Phyllis Ann Hoy of Scottsbluff, Neb.; six grandchildren, Eric and Clay Peterson, Rosann Babl, Kathryn Votruba, Rocky and Rodney Hoy; great-grandchildren, Alisha and Lindsey Hoy, Lloyd Votruba, Ryan and Tyler Joy, Mae Lynn and Tandy Peterson and Jennifer and Jeffrey Babl.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, one sister, one half-brother and one half-sister.
