- Time: 3:00 p.m.
- Location: Niobrara Country Club
The Niobrara County Library Foundation invites everyone to a Kentucky Derby Party to be held on Saturday, May 4 at the Niobrara Country Club at 3 p.m. Tickets are $30 and are available at the library and from foundation members Leslie Hammond, Pat Bruch, Lisa Pischel, Linda Frye, Kristine Groh and Carol Kilmer. Tickets will not be available the day of the event.
The first Kentucky Derby race occurred in 1875 with close to 10,000 people watching as 15 thoroughbred horses ran what was then a 1.5 mile course. In 1876, the length of the race was changed to 1.25 miles and remains that distance and features three-year-old thoroughbred horses. Today, an average of 150,000 visitors gather in Louisville to watch “the Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.”
The Derby Hat Parade takes place inside of Churchill Downs and refers to the sea of stylish and elegant hats worn by women and men alike during the Kentucky Derby. Be sure to wear your stylish hat and take part in a local hat parade. Derby fare will be served and you’ll also have a chance to wager on your favorite contender.
Proceeds from this fundraiser will be matched by the Wyoming Public Library Endowment Challenge Program, a 3:1 match in Niobrara County. For more information contact any foundation member.
