Ghosts of Wyoming : Stories presented by Author Alyson Hagy

Wyoming is a haunted state. Alyson Hagy, a Professor of English at the University of Wyoming and the author of six works of fiction, has been listening to Wyoming folks tell one another stories for years. What is a ghost? Why are some places in Wyoming haunted by stories that remain restless and unresolved for decades? Hagy has used local stories as the foundation for her new collection, Ghosts of Wyoming : Stories (Graywolf Press, 2010). On Wednesday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m., Hagy will give a PowerPoint presentation at the Niobrara County Library on the eight tales in her book. The stories feature “real” spirits from Laramie, Rock Springs, the Powder River Basin, Cody, Natrona Country, Carbon County, and elsewhere. The stories also dramatize recent changes in the West, including the reintroduction of wolves near Yellowstone, the drilling boom in Campbell County, and the interactions of rock climbers and Native Americans on sacred landscapes. The final novella in the book, “The Sin Eaters,” is a retelling of the lynching of Ella Watson and James Averell from the point of view of a Christian missionary who was passing through the Sweetwater Valley at the time of the crime.
