The film, The Visitor will be shown on Monday, April 27 at 6 p.m. at the library. This is the final film in the American Journeys: Border Lines in American Life series that includes a free meal and audience discussion. The Visitor is a moving story about a recently widowed college professor who discovers a pair of illegal aliens living in his New York City apartment. Victims of a real-estate scam, the young couple are eventually invited to remain and unlikely friendships develop. The realities of immigration injustice in a post 9/11 world are brought to light and the definition of an American is re-examined. This film stars Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Jekesai Gurira and Hiam Abbass and is directed by Thomas McCarthy.
New on the fiction shelf is “Terminal Freeze” by Lincoln Child. Evan Marshall, along with a small group of fellow scientists goes on an expedition to Alaska’s Federal Wildlife Zone. There the group discovers an enormous ancient animal encased in solid ice. This beast may be an ancient killing machine – and it may not be dead.
Other new fiction books include “The Renegades” by T. Jefferson Parker, “White Witch, Black Curse” by Kim Harrison, “Luke’s Story: by Faith Alone” by Tim LaHaye, “Irish Tweed” by Andrew M. Greeley, “A Mad Desire to Dance” by Elie Wiesel and “Mistress Shakespeare” by Karen Harper.
New non-fiction books are “The Will to Whatevs: a Guide to Modern Life” by Eugene Mirman, “Hands of my Father: A Hearing Boy, His Deaf Parents, and the Language of Love” by Myron Uhlberg and “Rodale’s Ultimate Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening.”
A new young adult book is “The Hickory Staff” by Robert Scott.
The Lennea Lewis Slagle Children’s Library has these new chapter books “The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman and “Skelton Creek” by Patrick Carman. New picture books are “April Fool! Watch Out for School!” by Diane DeGroat and “Panda’s Easter Basket” by Tara Jaye Marrow.
“Earth Day” is the theme for Storyhour on Tuesday, April 22 and Thursday, April 24. Storyhour is held on Tuesday and Thursday from from 10 to 11 a.m. for children ages 3 through kindergarten.
