Wednesday, September 11 at 6 p.m. Niobrara County rancher Jim Kruse will share the history of the Lightning Creek fight at the library. Just before sunset on October 31, 1903, a sheriff’s posse and a band of Oglala Sioux from the Pine Ridge Reservation engaged in a brief, sharp gunfight near Lightning Creek, northeast of Douglas, Wyoming. The Niobrara Historical Society will also host a tour, in collaboration with the Weston County Historical Society, to the battle site on Saturday, September 21 at 12:30 p.m. Contact JoAnn Wade (307-216-0400) by September 15 for more details and to register for the tour.

Emily Giffin’s latest novel is entitled “The Summer Pact.” In the wake of a tragedy a group of four friends make a pact to be there for each other no matter how separated they are by circumstance or distance. A decade later a plea is sent out, and the four of them gather to embark upon a life-changing adventure together. “The Summer Pact” is also available digitally in Libby.

“Tired of Being Tired” by Jess Connolly is among new non-fiction along with “The Noticer: Sometimes, All a Person Needs is a Little Perspective” by Andy Andrews, “Escape From Shadow Physics: Quantum Confusion and the Return to Reality” by Adam Kay.

The Lenna Lewis Slagle Children’s Library has these new chapter books: “Meet Me on Mercer Street” by Booki Vivat, “Mission Manhattan” by James Ponti and “The Serpent and the Beast” by Aaron Blabey. Among the newer picture books are “Maxine Gets a Job” by Alexandra Garyn, “The Yellow Bus” by Loren Long, “A Crocodile Should Never Skip Breakfast” by Colleen Larmour, “Little Red Henry” by Linda Urban and “Ruby’s Tools for Making Friends” by Apryl Stott.

“Teddy Bears & Friends” is the theme for Storyhour on September 10, 2024. Storyhour is held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday throughout the year for preschool-aged children.
