“The Jackal’s Mistress,” Chris Bohjalian’s latest novel, is inspired by a largely unknown piece of American history. Libby Steadman’s husband has been away a long time fighting in the Civil War. She’s been left with the running of a gristmill to produce grain for the Confederate Army. It is an uneasy life in the Shenandoah Valley with control swinging back and forth between North and South, then she finds a gravely injured Union officer. Does she leave him to die or risk nursing him back to health to try to negotiate a trade for news of her husband? “The Jackal’s Mistress” is also available digitally in Libby.
Other new fiction books include “The Last Wagon Train” by William W. Johnstone, “Bonded in Death” by J.D.
