The library will be closed Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24, 2017 for Thanksgiving. Regular hours resume on Monday, November 27th at 10 a.m.

“Ride with the Devil” will conclude the Civil War Dinner and Movie series on Monday, November 27 at 6 p.m. "Ride With the Devil" is a Civil War film that is not told with the benefit of hindsight. It's about characters who don't know the North will win--and sometimes don't much seem to care. It's said that all politics are local; this movie argues that some wars are local, too. Deane Tucker will facilitate discussion and a light meal will be available. Library programs are free and open to the public.

The Friends of the Library will be hosting their annual Homemade Cookie and Candy Sale on Wednesday, December 6 beginning at 3 p.m. Cookies and candy are sold as prepackaged plate or you can make your own choices and are sold by the pound. This year Homemade Soups and Breads will also be available, stop by to pick up some goodies for giving or eating and get supper too! The Friends of the Library provide funding for several library programs throughout the year, including Reading Is Fun which will be held February 14, March 14 and April 11, 2018. Your support is appreciated!

Holiday books are abounding at the library, stop in and check out some old favorites as well as new selections. Christmas music is also available to check out.

Sharyn McCrumb’s new novel “The Unquiet Grave” is based on the “Greenbrier Ghost” West Virginia’s best known tale of the supernatural. Attorney James P.D. Gardner was the first black attorney in 19th century West Virginia. In his 40-year career his most memorable case was when he helped defend a white man on trial for the murder of his young bride – a case that the prosecution based on the testimony of a ghost. This book is also available on CD.

Other new fiction books are “When the English Fall” by David Williams, “Gone Gull” by Donna Andrews, “The Girl Who Takes an Eye For an Eye” by David Lagercrantz, “Last Breath” by Karin Slaughter, Vince Flynn’s “Enemy of the State” by Kyle Mills, “Cherished Mercy” by Tracie Peterson, “The Western Star” by Craig Johnson, “These Healing Hills” by Ann H. Gabhart and “The Phantom Sheriff” by Walker A. Tompkins. New titles in the YA section are “Thornhill” by Pam Smy and “All the Bright Places” by Jennifer Niven.

“Soap Suds Row: the Bold Lives of Army Laundresses, 1802 – 1876” by Jennifer J. Lawrence and “The Origin of Others” by Toni Morrison are among new non-fiction selections.

The Lennea Lewis Slagle Children's Library has these new junior books, “The Pudding Problem” by Joe Berger plus a new series “Ballpark Mysteries” by David A. Kelly with titles like “The Pinstriped Ghost” and “The Astro Outlaw.” Some of the newer easy titles are “Creepy Pair of Underwear” by Aaron Reynolds, “Coyote Moon” by Maria Gianferrari and “The Invisible Boy” by Trudy Ludwig.
