Friday, October 20, 2017

The movie, “Glory” will be shown at the library on Monday, October 30 at 6 p.m. A light meal will be available. Library programs are free and open to the public.


Author, Papa C. Turner will present a program at the library on Wednesday, November 1 at 5:30 p.m. Turner will have copies of his books available.


“The Civil War for Kids” program kicks off on Thursday, November 2 with a presentation by John Voehl as “Abraham Lincoln” at 3:45 p.m. At 6 p.m. Voehl will present “The Emancipation Proclamation.” John Voehl has provided nearly 1,100 Lincoln presentations and appearances in 40 states to become a nationally recognized Lincoln Historian and Presenter.


Friday, November 3 the movie, “Johnny Shiloh” will be shown at 1:45 p.m. “Johnny Shiloh” is the true story about Johnny Clem, the ten-year-old drummer boy who became a union officer during the Civil War. The library provides the popcorn; please bring your own drink.


A two week, “Civil War for Kids” afterschool program featuring homespun crafts and fun will also be held beginning on Tuesday, November 7 for grades K-2 and Thursday, November 9 for grades 3 and up. Call the library at 334-3490 to register your children and for more information.


“Afterlife” is a novel by Marcus Sakey which is soon to be a major movie. The last thing that FBI agent Will Brody remembers is the explosion – a thousand shards of glass surfing a lethal shock wave. He wakes without a scratch. The building is in ruins. His team is gone. Outside, Chicago is dark. Cars lie abandoned. No planes cross the sky. He’s relieved to spot other people until he sees they’re carrying machetes. Welcome to the afterlife.


Other new fiction books are “House of Spies” by Daniel Silva, “Seeing Red” by Sandra Brown, “Telling Tales” by Ann Cleeves, “The Jensen Brand” by William W. Johnstone, “Y is For Yesterday” by Sue Grafton, “The Return” by Suzanne Woods Fisher, “The Saboteur” by Andrew Gross, “Summer on Firefly Lake” by Jen Gilroy and “Snap Judgment” by Marcia Clark. A new title for the young adult is “The Secret of Spellshadow Manor” by Bella Forrest. Several new “Soaring Eagle” titles are available to check out. Stop in and take a look!


“What it’s Like to be a Dog: and Other Adventures in Animal Neuroscience” by Gregory Berns joins the newest “Guinness World Records” in the new nonfiction section.


The Lennea Lewis Slagle Children's Library has these new junior books, “The Lady’s Slipper” by Emma Carlson Berne, “Laugh Out Loud” by James Patterson and “Message in a Bottle” by Kathryn Reiss. Some of the new easy titles are “Dogosaurus Rex” by Anne Staniszewski, “Lilly Can Find Rainbows in Disguise” by Papa C. Turner and “Here Comes Teacher Cat” by Deborah Underwood.


“Happy Halloween Party!” is the theme for Storyhour on Tuesday October 31, 2017. Children are invited to wear their costumes. Storyhour is held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday throughout the year. Call 334-3274 to hear a recorded story anytime. Dial-A-Story is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
