W.C. REED, WELL KNOWN LUSK RESIDENT, PASSES MONDAY
Late Monday afternoon of this week residents of Lusk and Niobrara county learned with sorrow of the death of Walter C. Reed, widely known citizen of this county and eastern Wyoming. Mr. Reed passing away at 2:50 p.m., Monday afternoon, July 10th.
The deceased gentleman and his family came to Wyoming and settled in Lusk in 1913, he having always been active in the business life and social welfare of the community until recent years. He was associated with the banking business until about 1920, later following the livestock business until his health became so that he was forced to retire from active life.
Born December 24, (1872) near Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Joseph and Nellie F. Reed, Walter C. Reed passed away at his home in Lusk, Wyoming, Monday, July 10, 1939, aged 66 years, 6 months and 16 days. He came west with his parents in 1877, the family first settling near Schuyler, Nebraska, later moving near Olerick, South Dakota, where he grew to young manhood, receiving his education in the schools at that town and at Hot Springs, South Dakota.
On March 27, 1897 he was united in marriage to Effie M. Stevens at Harrison, Nebraska, where the young couple established their home, living there until 1912 when the family moved to Idaho, returning to Lusk the following year. Seven children were born to bless this union, six of whom survive his passing together with his devoted wife. One child passed away in infancy. The children are: Walter N. of Lusk; Mrs. Frankie Hern, of Douglas; Earl C., of Newcastle; Mrs. Faye Russell of Kemmerer; Ray and Joe, both of Lance Creek. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Amy Story of Harrison, Nebr., and Mrs. Grace McCain of Yakima, Washington and one brother, J.W. Reed of Creston, South Dakota, two sisters preceded him in death, as well as nine grandchildren and several other near relatives.
Mr. Reed had been in failing health during the past five years and although he was given every care and medical attention, his was an ailment for which little or no relief might be secured and he passed his last days at the family home with his wife and children who gave him every care that loving hands could give.
Funeral services ere held from the Peet Mortuary Chapel Wednesday afternoon, July 12th, 1939, at 1:30 o'clock, with services in charge of the Rev. D. J. Clark of Crawford, Nebraska. Harmony Lodge No. 24 A.F.& A.M., Lusk, of which Mr. Reed was long a member, conducted the funeral. Pall bearers were: Richard Pfister, Ira Thomas, Leslie McCarthy, T.A. Godfrey, J.P. Costlow and Harry Hargraves. Burial was made in the Forest Lawn Cemetery at Douglas.
