Charles Gaythe, 72, Dies Here
Charles Gathye, 72, died in the Spencer Hospital Friday. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. from Peet Chapel with Rev. Theodore Foster officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.
Mrs. A. F. DeCastro and Mrs. Emerson Bonner sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Mrs. J. P. Watson was organist.
Pallbearers were R. J. Ruda, Nick Kaan, Pat Vollmer, Emil Belcher, George Hillen and Gerhard Vick.
Charles Gathye was born October 22, 1886 at O'Neill, Nebr., the fourth child of Mr. and Mrs. John Gathye. His parents immigrated here from Germany.
He resided in this area for over 37 years. He was one of the old-time ranchhands working first for Nick Kaan and later for Frank E. Brooks on the Brooks-Barrett ranch at Manville. He was considered one of the best sheepherders in the west. In July of 1957 his right leg was amputated.
Survivors include a brother, Bill Gathye of Council Bluffs, Ia., one sister, Mrs. Emma M. Felton of Chicago and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, two brothers and two sisters previously died.
Mrs. Felton has been caring for her brother for the past two years and now plans to return to Chicago. Bill was with his brother one week prior to his death.
