Henry York of Shawnee Dies
Henry W. York, 71, long-time resident of the Shawnee community, died suddenly the morning of June 18 at his home. Funeral services were conducted from the Stark's chapel in Douglas at 2:00 o'clock June 21. Burial was made in the Douglas Park Cemetery.
Henry W. York was born Dec. 25, 1880, at Pleasant Hill, Mo., the son of Albert and Bell York. He spent his young manhood in that area and on Nov. 19, 1902, was married to Elizabeth Elgin at Butler, Mo.
Mr. York moved to Wyoming in 1903. He moved out of the state for about two years returning to Shawnee in 1907 when he took up a homestead. For many years Mr. York operated a coal mine at Shawnee but discontinued this business in 1941. He also was engaged in farming and ranching. During World War II he was employed in defense work at the P.O.W. camp in Douglas.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Gladys and Mary, and one son, Tom. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Walter of Douglas and Paul of Lance Creek; one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn G. Anderson of Medora, N.D.; two brothers, Tom and John of Shawnee; one sister, Mrs. Della Boyd of Chelsa, Okla.; and five grandchildren.
