Ray Walter, 4-H Leader, Dies of Heart Attack
Ray Walter, 58, rancher at Node where he has operated an auto repair shop, died suddenly Saturday of a heart attack. He had come in from doing the morning chores feeling ill. When his condition became worse Dr. Walter E. Reckling was called and Mr. Walter was taken to the Spencer hospital about 10:45 and he died 45 minutes later.
As the result of ten years of leadership in Niobrara County 4-H clubs, Mr. Walter was named the outstanding men's 4-H leader at the 4-H Achievement Day program last fall. He had devoted much time to training boys in truck and tractor maintenance and in electrical work, giving emphasis to the importance of electricity on farms and ranches with the advent of REA.
He has operated the ranch near Node since 1934. It was there that he established an auto repair shop which he has also operated since, working long hours and long weeks to serve the customers that came to him from many miles. In 1957 he had erected a new garage building to better accommodate this business.
Raymond Frank Walter was born at Fowler, Ind., August 24, 1902, the son of Albert and Frances Walter. The family moved to Wyoming in 1918 settling in Niobrara County. He was married to Lucille Smith in September 1932. They have lived since 1934 at their present home.
He is survived by his widow, Lucille, two sons, Gerald Ray and James D.; three sisters, Emma C. Walter of Node, and Mrs. Verda Sides of Node, and Mrs. Eva Updike of Osage. There are two grandchildren. His parents and one brother died previously.
Funeral services were held at the Peet Chapel at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Jacob Nein of Casper in charge. "The Lord Is My Shepherd" and "Rock of Ages" was sung by a quartet from the Congregational Church Choir composed of L. E. Johnsonbaugh, James V. Willson, Gerald Bardo and Larry Thomas. Mrs. Gerald Bardo was organist. Pallbearers were nephews, Roger Law, Doug Sides, Ralph Sides, Warren Walter, Charles Lund, Jr., Eddie Lee Jones and Larry Lund. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.
